IGN Reviews TMNT Ep #3: Turtle Temper

The folks over at IGN.com have posted a review for yesterday’s excellent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3rd episode, titled: Turtle Temper.

From the review: ” There was some first-rate action this week as well. The fight scenes between the turtles and the Kraang were strikingly slick, but the boss battle with Spider Bytez was equally fun to watch. The multilevel acid dodging was overall just a pretty cool sequence, especially when Raph showed up to join the party. I’m also digging the idea of having these mutant monsters set up as recurring characters; I’m hoping the show will maintain a little more of a serialized vibe, and less procedural. The more character development they can squeeze into this cast — good guys and bad guys alike — the better. Plus, who doesn’t love to hear the cynical ramblings of Lewis Black?

Much like the premiere, this episode had some really funny moments, too. Raph and Mikey’s brotherly roughhousing was a great dynamic. Likewise, the brother’s pestering of Raph with suction-cup arrows during their training scene was pretty hilarious. Indeed, some of the most memorable moments so far have been when the turtles are just hanging out, staking out a rooftop or training with each other.

After a successful, and apparently record breaking, premiere, the new Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles animated series has been renewed for a second season. Below is Nickelodeon’s full press release:

“NEW YORK – Oct. 2, 2012– Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Donatello – aka the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – made a triumphant return to television in their new Nickelodeon series premiere this weekend (Saturday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m., ET/PT), ranking as the week’s top telecast with kids 2-11 (6.2/2.1 million) and boys 6-11 (8.2/837,000) across broadcast and cable TV, and the number-one kids program on basic cable with total viewers (drawing 3.9 million) for the week. Additionally, the new CG-animated version of the series hit a ratings high for Nickelodeon with boys 2-11 (7.5/1.3 million), and was the network’s top-rated premiere for an animated series since 2009. During its premiere weekend the series reached nearly 12 million total viewers.

Following its launch success, Nickelodeon has ordered 26 additional episodes of the series, which will begin airing next year. Additionally, the reintroduction of this storied franchise has already ignited excitement in the licensing community, with the new line of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles consumer products from Playmates Toys being named ‘Hot Toys for the Holidays’ on the prestigious Toys R’ Us and Time to Play lists.

IGN Reviews the 1st episode of Nick’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

IGN, a site that clearly was not impressed by the early previews of Nick’s TMNT show, gave its verdict of the first episode, titled “Rise of the turtles”, and it seems that the show was able to win IGN over.

From the review:” In the end, though, the real draw of this show is its characters. Not only is the series voiced by a stellar cast — Sean Astin, Mae Whitman and Jason Biggs among them — but the writing is genuinely funny. Greg Cipes’ Michaelangelo in particular has some hilarious interplay with his brothers throughout the pilot. What’s more, each turtle is dynamic and layered, with different goals and perspectives. April, meanwhile, has been aged down to 16, which may seem like a bad idea at first, but it actually matches her up with the turtles and allows her to play on their level.

In the vein of shows like The Legend of Korra and Young Justice, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a show that’s entertaining for all ages. While the tech and pop culture references have been updated to reflect the modern times, the new series still retains TMNT’s trademark humor, as well as its violence — although, to be fair, alien cyborgs take the brunt of the beating. Nevertheless, the turtles aren’t afraid of using their weapons whilst kicking butt, which, as an older viewer, is much appreciated.

Review of Rise of the Turtles:

“The two-part Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series opener is great. It’s fun, fast, and energetic. All the characters have great personalities, each quickly defined and instantly likeable. And, arguably for the first time ever, Michelangelo is hilarious. He has easily two of the biggest laughs in the entire opener. The action is swift and nicely stylized, the animation top-notch. Yes, some of the human character designs look questionable, but overall everything works nicely. Visual gags are pulled off superbly, the story is interesting and true to the extensive history of the characters (blending a bunch of different interpretations), and I’m genuinely interested to see where things will go from here. The Turtle designs even bring unique quirks to each of the young heroes, like Mikey’s more innocent look or Donatello’s missing tooth, matching to their personalities. The two-part opener is perfectly paced, it’s a pure blast from start to finish, and there looks to be hints at ongoing subplots to the first season. With luck I’ll have time to review it more in-depth, but this is a great start to what looks to be a fun, action-packed cartoon.”

First review of the Nick’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Premiere is very positive!

Nickelodeon’s highly anticipated TMNT Animated series, is premiering this saturday, and although the few clips that we saw of the series have all given us quite the confidence, denofgreek.com affirmed this feeling by giving us the first review of the series debut, and boy is it positive!

From the review: ” The thing about The Rise of the Turtles that impressed me most was the high standard of writing. The episodes are very funny. We get jokey dialogue, slapstick and humorous visual effects, and, for the most part, they really work.

The story moves at a good pace, allowing familiar characters to establish newly refined personalities without imposing on the action. The TMNT, in particular, are full, individual characters right away, which is something previous adaptations have struggled with. The new Michelangelo warrants special mention as the obvious highlight. This Mikey is silly, energetic and always enthused; he’s a proper cartoon character.

While the writing (and animation, which we’ll get to shortly) set Michelangelo up, voice actor Greg Cipes brings him to life perfectly. The character could easily have become annoying if overplayed, but Cipes finds just the right tone to make the character work. All four of the Turtles voice actors work well, with Jason Biggs proving to be an inspired choice as Leonardo. Amongst the supporting cast, I really liked what I heard of Mae Whitman as April O’Neil. ”
