Comicbookmovie.com interviews Peter Laird about all things Ninja Turtles

Comicbookmovie.com posted a nice interview with TMNT co-creator Peter Laird, where all kinds of Ninja Turtles topics are discussed: From the original cartoon series to Michael Bay’s controversial comment. And if you know Peter, you know what kind of answers to expect: Honest, right to the point, and sometimes even brutal.

Below are couple snippets from the interview courtesy of comicbookmovie.com:

Peter, you weren’t a huge fan of the 80’s animated series, but if you had to take a few elements from that show and apply it to a new live-action film, which would they be?”

If you are talking about elements of that show AS THEY WERE USED IN THE SHOW, I would say “nothing.”

Knowing that Kevin Eastman is working with Michael Bay and Jonathan Liebesman on the live-action film, does that make you more comfortable?

Not really. Given that one of the last things Kevin did when we were still partners was to push hard for the inclusion of “Venus de Milo”, the wretched “girl Turtle” in the live-action TV series “TMNT: The Next Mutation.” It’s safe to say that he and I have different views on what should and shouldn’t be done with the Turtles. That being said, his point of view on these things may have changed in the last twelve years. I don’t really know. I guess you could say it doesn’t make me more OR less comfortable.

TMNT Reboot director to fans: ” Rest assured your childhood is safe”

Speaking to cinema blend, Jonathan liebesman, director of the TMNT reboot movie, reassured fans that their childhoods are safe with him.

When asked about the tone of the film, Liebesman had this to say: “I don’t know yet because I’m sitting in a room with Kevin Eastman who co-created it and we’re busy working on it. But if you were a fan, you’ll love it and if you’re a new fan, you’ll love it, too, but anything new or expanding the universe is all coming from Kevin and is true to the mythology and will tie in with the mythology and people can rest assured their childhoods are safe.

And when asked about how will the turtle be portrayed, Liebesman answered: “I think for turtles you’d look at Rise of the Planet of the Apes, you know, that kind of stuff.

Cinema blend then asked a direct question wondering if the turtles will be CGI, to which Liebesman replied “Maybe!

While the idea of the turtles being aliens has not been debunked yet, Liebesman is doing a terrific job controlling the damage Michael Bay’s announcement caused.

so are you fans reassured after reading Liebesman’s response?

TMNT reboot working title revealed?

The news regarding the upcoming tmnt movie reboot are still pouring in, but unlike the previous news focusing on Bay’s “alien” announcement, this tidbit is about the movie’s title.According to bleedingcool, the work title for the movie, previously thought to be teenage mutant ninja turtles, dropped both the words “teenage” and “mutant”, thus becoming “ninja turtles”.
Bleedingcool’s sources also give the reason behind the title’s change “seems to be driven by marketing. Think of John Carter and how Disney wouldn’t allow for a title with either “Princess” or “Mars”.

Seems like a fair decision. Hopefully, dropping the word mutant does not mean that the turtles are not anything other than mutant(if you see what I mean)

TMNT’s reboot director gives more details about the movie’s vision and the alien Turtles

Talking to IFC this time, TMNT’s reboot director, Jonathan Liebesman, offered more details about the upcoming movie, and addresses the fans by the following statements:

When asked about the fans reaction to Michael Bay’s comment: ” I thought it was incredible to see how passionate the fans are,To me, that is awesome — to be working on something where there’s so much passion. I missed a lot of it, because I’ve been stuck in a room with Kevin Eastman, the guy who drew the very first Turtle.”

It’s not fair to just take some comments out of context and go crazy, but I totally understand and really appreciate the passion, and I can’t wait for those exact people to see what we’re doing,” he said. “Because the stuff I see that Kevin’s coming up with, the ideas… As someone who grew up with the Turtles and loved them, I think it’s awesome.”

TMNT Reboot Director talks to the Collider about the Alien aspect and more

Jonathan-Liebesman-TMNT-Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-interview-slice2

And the Saga of Alien turtles still goes on! After many TMNT related actors, writers, artists and even the creators of the franchise let their voices heard about wether they approve or not of Michal Bay’s Alien Turtles, a new explanation comes to the table! This time it the TMNT reboot’s director, Jonathan Liebesman, himself who talks to the Collider about the whole concept of the movie including what Bay announced last week.

When asked about the “Alien” aspect fo the turtles and fans outrage, Liebesman had this to say:

“Look, it’s so funny—if everyone was such a die-hard fan, they would know that the TCRI canisters where the ooze comes from.  That is alien ooze.  Now I’m not saying what Michael said is exactly what the movie is, because we’re sitting in a room now figuring everything out.  So we don’t know, but we are like Michael said: we’re expanding it, and the expansion will be true to the mythology.  I promise you: fans will love it.”

Peter Laird clarifies his previous statement regarding Alien TMNT

TMNT Co-Creator Peter Laird made a long statement earlier that was met with confusion, as people did not understand if Peter really liked Bay’s idea of the Turtles being aliens, or if he was just being sarcastic. To make his position clear, Peter Laird posted the following in response to blog question:

Did you really get out of what I wrote that I in any way, shape or form LIKE the idea of a planet of Turtles? If so, I guess I have to re-think how I express myself.

Just so it’s absolutely clear — I think a planet of turtles is not, in and of itself, a bad idea for some kind of science fiction/fantasy story. But as a way to explain any aspect of the backstory of TMNT, I think it is awful and unnecessary.

Of course, we have no idea at this point if the plan is to have a planet of Turtles. It’s probably a good idea to wait and see. — PL

There you have it folks, Peter Laird officially thinks the idea of the turtles coming from the distant space is both awful and unnecessary.

Funny: The Nostalgia Critics states his position on the Alien Turtles

For those of you who do not know “the nostalgia Critics” is, here is a short description taken from wikipedia:

The Nostalgia Critic is a web television series starring Doug Walker as the eponymous reviewer. The series was initially launched on YouTube before moving to an independent site, That Guy with the Glasses, run by production company Channel Awesome.

The show involves the Nostalgia Critic (played by Chicago comedian Doug Walker), often referred to as simply the Critic or NC, reviewing mostly nostalgic media in a negative (but humorous) manner. This mostly concerns movies and television series from the 1980s to 1990s, but he has made exceptions for movies that came out after 2000.”

Doug reviewed all 3 Ninja Turtles live action movies in a very humorous video that i will post in the next few days.

TMNT Co-Creator Kevin Eastman praises Michael Bay’s vision

It seems the drama surrounding Michael bay’s TMNT announcement is far from over. After various TMNT related actors, artists and even the Co-creator Peter Laird voiced their opinion, the second C-creator Kevin Eastman (who is still involved with TMNT in the form of the current IDW comics) took a stance today by releasing the following statement:

Kevin Eastman – Hey Guys, Sorry to have been away for so long–completely swamped with work–but it is some pretty exciting stuff. I had been invited to check out the TMNT film development by my friend Scott Mednick over the years, and a while back had a full look behind the curtian at what writers Appelbaum and Nemec, director Liebesman, and producer Bay are doing–and trust me–it IS AWESOME. I’m officially on board, and will share more as I’m allowed… thanks all!

So it seems Kevin knows more about Bay’s vision that makes him believe in the derection the TMNT movie reboot is taking. After hearing such a positive statement, will the fans finally take the “chill” pill michael bay offered yesterday ? Only time will tell.
